An 8-foot ceiling leaves just 12 inches for a light fixture if everyone is to walk under it, and most homeowners find that out after the fixture is already hung. Decorating an entryway means choosing five pieces sized to the space, a console, mirror, light, rug and a spot for shoes, while always keeping at least 36 inches of clear walkway. That is how I measure entries in Flower Mound and across Dallas–Fort Worth, from two-story foyers to front doors that open straight into the living room.
How do you decorate an entryway? Start with a console 30 to 36 inches tall, then a mirror two-thirds its width hung 4 to 8 inches above it, a light fixture with its bottom at least 7 feet above the floor, a rug kept 2 inches clear of the door's swing, and a 36-inch walkway.
What size chandelier for a foyer
A foyer chandelier's diameter comes from a simple rule: add the length and width of the foyer in feet, and use the total as the diameter in inches. A 10 by 12-foot foyer takes a 22-inch fixture. Its bottom should sit at least 7 feet above the floor in a single-story entry.
Ceiling height changes everything. A fixture's height usually runs 2.5 to 3 inches per foot of ceiling, but the 7-foot clearance always wins. This is the math I do before recommending a fixture:
| Ceiling height | Room left for the fixture | What works |
|---|---|---|
| 8-foot ceiling | 12 inches | Flush or semi-flush mount |
| 9-foot ceiling | 24 inches | Pendant 18 to 24 inches tall |
| 10-foot ceiling | 36 inches | Medium chandelier |
| 18-foot two-story foyer | Down to the second-floor landing | Fixture 45 to 54 inches tall, bottom at landing height |
How high to hang a chandelier in a two-story foyer
In a two-story foyer, the bottom of the chandelier lines up with the second-floor landing or railing, typically 8 to 11 feet above the floor, instead of dropping into the first-floor space. Many DFW homes have this kind of entry, and it is where I see the most fixtures hung too low.
If there is a window above the front door, I center the fixture in it so it reads from the street at night. And a heavy fixture in a two-story foyer is always a job for a licensed electrician, with a ceiling box rated for the weight. For bulb color, the table in my guide on how to choose paint colors for your home remodel applies here too.
What size console table for an entryway
An entryway console runs 30 to 36 inches tall, most often 30 to 34, and 10 to 18 inches deep; in a narrow hall, stay at 10 to 14 inches deep. For length, aim for about two-thirds of the wall it sits on.
Before you buy, do the tape test: mark the console's footprint and the door's swing on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for two days. If you trip on the tape or the door hits it, you need a slimmer console or a wall-mounted shelf.
How much walkway space to leave
A clear walkway in an entry should be at least 36 inches wide, and 42 inches feels comfortable. The math is simple: in a 48-inch hallway, a 12-inch-deep console leaves exactly the 36 inches you need to pass with bags or groceries.
Many DFW homes have no foyer at all, and the front door opens straight into the living room. There, a small rug, a 10 to 12-inch floating shelf and a row of hooks define the entry without stealing space from the room.
What size mirror over a console table
A mirror over a console should measure two-thirds to three-quarters of the console's width and never be wider than it. Hang it with the bottom edge 4 to 8 inches above the tabletop so the two read as one piece.
With no console, a mirror or piece of art hangs with its center at 57 to 60 inches from the floor, the same rule I use in living rooms, covered in how to refresh your living room without buying anything.
What size rug for an entryway
A small entry takes a 3x5 rug, and a medium foyer a 4x6 or 5x8. Keep the rug at least 2 inches beyond the door's open arc and leave 4 to 6 inches of bare floor around it.
Low-pile rugs work best by the door: a 36-inch front door glides over them and they clean easily. In a long entry hall, a runner 2 to 3 feet wide stretches the space visually.
Entryway bench, hooks and shoe storage
An entryway bench has a seat about 18 inches high and runs 14 to 18 inches deep. If shoes go underneath, leave at least 12 inches of clearance. It is the piece that organizes a family entry best, because it gives everyone a place to sit and take shoes off.
No room for a bench? A row of hooks at shoulder height and a basket on the floor do the same job. What matters is that everything has a spot and nothing lands on the console.
Front door and porch styling
Planters beside the front door should be at least one-third the door's height. On a standard 36 by 80-inch door, that means roughly 27 inches tall and at least 18 inches wide, so the pair reads as substantial from the street.
The wreath has its own rule, about two-thirds the width of the door, and I cover it with the rest of the seasonal decor in how to decorate your home for Christmas step by step.
Entryway mistakes I see most
The mistakes I fix in entries almost always come down to scale:
- A console that is too deep, leaving less than 36 inches to walk past.
- A mirror wider than the console, which makes the console look undersized.
- A hanging chandelier under an 8-foot ceiling, where only 12 inches are available.
- A thick rug that catches the door every time it opens.
- Planters that are too small next to an 80-inch door.

| Console depth | 10 to 18 in | 25 to 46 cm |
| Console length | Two-thirds of the wall | Two-thirds of the wall |
| Clear walkway | 36 in minimum, 42 in comfortable | 91 cm minimum, 107 cm comfortable |
| Mirror width | Two-thirds to three-quarters of the console | Two-thirds to three-quarters of the console |
| Mirror above console | 4 to 8 in | 10 to 20 cm |

Frequently asked questions
What should I put in my entryway?
Five pieces cover it: a console or shelf for keys, a mirror, good lighting, a rug and somewhere for shoes or coats. Pick a console 30 to 36 inches tall and keep at least 36 inches of clear walkway. In a small entry, about 3 feet of open wall is enough for a shelf, mirror and hooks.
What is the ideal height for an entryway console table?
Most entry consoles run 30 to 36 inches tall and 10 to 18 inches deep. In a narrow hall, stay at 10 to 14 inches deep. A 12-inch-deep console in a 48-inch hallway leaves exactly the 36 inches of clear walkway you need to pass comfortably with bags or groceries.
How high should a mirror be above a console table?
Hang it so the bottom edge sits 4 to 8 inches above the tabletop. Choose a mirror two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the console and never wider than it. Over a 60-inch console, a mirror about 40 inches wide looks right and keeps the two pieces reading as one.
What size chandelier for a foyer?
Add the foyer's length and width in feet and use the total as the diameter in inches. A 10 by 12-foot foyer takes a 22-inch fixture. For its height, allow 2.5 to 3 inches per foot of ceiling, and keep the bottom at least 7 feet above the floor in a single-story entry.
How high should a chandelier hang in a two-story foyer?
Align the bottom of the chandelier with the second-floor landing or railing, typically 8 to 11 feet above the floor, instead of dropping it into the first-floor space. If there is a window above the front door, center the fixture in it so it reads from the street at night.
What size rug for an entryway?
Use a 3x5 in a small entry and a 4x6 or 5x8 in a medium foyer. Leave 4 to 6 inches of bare floor on each side and keep the rug at least 2 inches beyond the door's open arc. A low-pile rug keeps a 36-inch front door from catching every time it opens.
What size planters for a front door?
Each planter should be at least one-third the height of the door. On a standard 36 by 80-inch front door, that means roughly 27 inches tall, and at least 18 inches wide so the pair reads as substantial from the street instead of disappearing beside the door.
